A preview of "The Rock Tenor" and "Classic M: The Music
of Motown, USA" was presented on
January 11, 2009 at Florence Gould Hall in New York. This
showcase was part of the 2009 Association of Performing Arts
Presenters Conference.
About The Showcase:
"The Rock Tenor" is a new concert
experience that brings together classical and Broadway music
with some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written,
featuring music by The Beatles, U2, Journey, Daughtry, Led
Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Police, and Queen, fused
with the sounds of Bach, Beethoven, Puccini, Handel,
Bernstein, Webber, Rodgers, and Sondheim. On January 11, Rob
Evan will be joined by featured singers Patti Russo (Meat
Loaf), Danny Zolli (Jesus Christ Superstar), Brandi
Burkhardt (Tale of Two Cities, Mamma Mia), and Tad
Wilson (Rock of Ages), along with a group of the most
versatile musicians in New York, to give audiences a preview
of the upcoming 2009-2010 concert tour..
From 1959 to 1972, the city of Detroit changed the sound
of American music forever. It was a new brand of popular
music that introduced artists like Diana Ross and the
Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The
Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas, Gladys
Knight & The Pips, and Lionel Richie. "Classic M: The
Music of Motown, USA" is a new concert that
celebrates the Detroit sound with a group of the most
talented young performers in the country performing songs
with the same passion and unbridled joy as the original
artists. The show features performances by Lawrence Clayton
(Bells Are Ringing, The Civil War, Once Upon a Mattress,
Dreamgirls) and Ramona Keller (Brooklyn, Caroline or
Change, Smokey Joe's Cafe). They are backed by a
seven-piece band playing authentic arrangements of the
classic hits. |

The National Theater, Washington DC - June 1, 2008
AP: Broadway came to the nation's capital Sunday night
during a gala for the Ford's Theatre attended by President
Bush and first lady Laura Bush.
Actor Hal Holbrook, country music singer Trisha Yearwood,
former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, and other stars
performed songs and spoken word pieces from the musical "The
Civil War" at the National Theatre, which hosted the event
because the beneficiary theater is under renovation.
"Laura and I have been coming here now for eight years to
the Ford Theatre gala and this is by far the best," Bush
said after the performances. "It's such an uplifting
performance and a reminder of what a great president Abraham
Lincoln was."
The musical, which premiered in Houston in 1998 before
opening on Broadway, follows the course of the war from
multiple perspectives.
The spoken word selections invoked Frederick Douglass,
Sojourner Truth, and Lincoln among others. Holbrook read
several selections.
Yearwood performed two numbers: "If I Should Lose My Way"
with Broadway star Rob Evan, and "The Honor of Your Name."
Aiken sang "Sarah."
Other performers included actor Avery Brooks, musician
Larry Gatlin and author Maya Angelou. Angelou was one of the
evenings two recipients of Lincoln Medals.
Actress Ruby Dee also was honored with a medal. Her
daughter accepted it on her behalf.
"The Lincoln Medal brings Abraham Lincoln's legacy to
life by recognizing his wisdom and vision in the work of
today's leaders," the first lady said when introducing the
recipients. "It honors those who through their
accomplishments or personal attributes illuminate the
character of our most beloved president."
